History of Andaman and Nicobar

Andaman and Nicobar islands have an age-old history and have been described in the epic Ramayana too. In the 7th century A.D, Buddhist monk from China, I’Tsing referred these islands as the land of nakeds in his travelogue. In 1050 A.D, the Chola Dynasty also quoted Andaman and Nicobar islands as Nakkavaram or the land of nakeds in their Tanjore stone inscription. In 1292, Marco Polo referred Nicobar as Necuveron and it is believed that he was among the first from the West to set foot on one of the islands. During Marco’s time, Andaman and Nicobar was the habitat of wild ferocious and brute like Angamanians. Car Nicobar was referred as Lo-Tan-Kvo by the then famous Chinese writers, while the name Andaman came from Marco Polo’s word Angamanian.

In the early 18th century, Kanhoji Angre, a Maratha admiral made his base on these islands, and attacked the Portuguese, Dutch and English merchant. Kanhoji died in the year 1729, eventually the British established their first colony in these islands in 1789. In 1888, both these islands were united by the British and they added them to their empire.

Andaman and Nicobar turned into a penal colony for Indian freedom fighters which remained till 1919. The infamous Cellular Jail was completed in 1908, where thousands of anti-British Indians were tortured to death or simply executed. In 1947, with India’s independence, Andaman and Nicobar Islands also became free along with the whole country. In the year 1956, on 1st November Andaman came under Central rule, since then Andaman and Nicobar is an integral part of India.

Irmataga tribes who live in forest are primitive even today, while the ar-yuato tribe who live along the sea-shore living mainly on fish, meat, fruits, vegetables and honey. Tribes of Andaman even today believe that human-creator Phalgun brings storm, rain, and earthquake out of his anger.

People from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), Sri Lanka, Mynamar and South Indians from Tamil Nadu and Kerala have come to live in Andaman for last few decades. Andamanese culture is a blend of several cultures and you will also find the touch of Indian culture. Climate

Andaman and Nicobar islands have a tropical climate that never reaches to extreme. During the monsoon seasons of May to mid September and November to mid December, medium to heavy rain is recorded. Rains and tropical storms in late summer often cause heavy damage to these islands. In summers, the temperature in Andaman and Nicobar islands reaches to a maximum of 31°C while it drops to a minimum of 23°C.
